IYD: What peace means to Liton

“To me, peace is hope and I believe helping others brings peace. I dream of a community where each and every person will help each other.”

“To me, peace is hope and I believe helping others brings peace. I dream of a community where each and every person will help each other.”

Liton is a youth activist continuously working to stop child marriages and has stopped more than 56 child marriages in the past one year.

My dream is to create the biggest youth voluntary organisation in the world and to bring positive changes in the world using that organisation.

I am Liton Islam living in Dinajpur, in the northern-most part of Bangladesh and I am 18 years old. I have passed secondary education this year and I hope to be able to read in a good university. I love making friends, especially with children and youth, but I particularly like being friends with children. I hate lies. I love to act in dramas and sing songs.

In the last one year, I stopped 56 child marriages directly in my community with the help of local administration. I organised cycle rally in public places and educational institutions in order to raise awareness against drugs and smoking in four different unions as a result of which the Honorable Foreign Minister of our country declared my union as smoking free area. I was able to stop 3 eve-teasing incidents and I helped the local administration in 5 raids against drugs. I have also organised a youth activist organisation in my community and a result of continuous awareness raising initiatives taken by us the rate of child marriage has decreased to 19%, which used to be much higher in the past.
